Dashain & Tihar Restocking Guide: What Nepali Retailers Should Stock Up On

April 18, 2026 · 2 min read

Dashain and Tihar are the biggest sales window of the year for most general and electronics retailers in Nepal. They're also the time when suppliers are busiest and stock runs out fastest — which means the shops that plan their wholesale orders early are the ones that stay stocked through the festival, while shops that wait are stuck reordering from whoever has anything left.

Order earlier than feels necessary

The most common mistake is treating festival restocking like a regular monthly order — placing it two or three weeks out. Popular categories sell through supplier stock quickly in the weeks before Dashain, and reordering close to the festival often means paying more or settling for whatever's left. Placing a larger bulk order 4–6 weeks ahead, while suppliers still have full stock, gives you both better selection and more negotiating room on bulk pricing.

Categories that see the biggest festival demand

While every shop's customer base is different, a few categories consistently see a jump around Dashain and Tihar:

  • Mobile accessories — phones, earbuds, and power banks are common gifts, and demand for chargers and cases rises alongside new phone purchases
  • Electronics and appliances — bigger-ticket gifting and home upgrades cluster around the festival season
  • Lighting and decorative items — especially ahead of Tihar
  • Gift-appropriate packaging and accessories — items that work well as a gift, not just a functional purchase

Reviewing new arrivals and featured products in the weeks before the festival season is a quick way to spot what's trending before you commit to a bulk order.

Don't overcommit on unproven categories

Festival demand is real, but it's not unlimited — and unsold festival stock sitting on shelves in Mangsir is dead capital. Put your biggest bulk orders behind categories you already know sell well for your shop, and treat anything new as a smaller, exploratory order rather than a major bet.

Plan for a cash flow gap, not just a stock gap

Bulk festival orders mean a larger upfront cash outlay than your usual monthly restocking. Planning that cash flow a month or two ahead — rather than discovering the gap the week you need to place the order — is as important as the stock planning itself.

Keep a short list of backup suppliers

Because festival demand strains supplier stock across the board, it's worth identifying a second source for your top festival categories ahead of time, not after your usual supplier runs out. A five-minute check now saves a stressful scramble in Ashwin.
